A Poem on Intentionality and Emergence

Two color featured image for the poem showcasing contrast of intentionality and emergence.

My friends and I, often talk about,

the themes of love and romance.

We also often,

in those discussions,

wonder about,

emergence and intentionality.

Often, those discussions

are exhausting.

Did I fall in love with you,

like a leaf drops from a tree?

Or the way, humans build

skyscrapers, houses, and mausoleums?

Did I fall out of love with you,

like a rainbow appears

when light strikes water?

Or, or like a writer edits out,

fervently,

the bits he didn’t like,

from his manuscript.

A postscript –

Maybe it isn’t an either/or answer.

Maybe it isn’t as simple as

writing and running

lines of code,

which run without error, either

or, must be debugged.

Maybe the difference I am drawing

does not even exist

except in complex systems of

language and philosophy.
